Ralph McQuarrie Has Sadly Passed Away Aged 82

Where would Sci-Fi be without him?

It kind of sucks that the first official post on our new site has to be so somber, but it is important to recognise the work of a true artistic genius, without whom, Star Wars would never have been the universally loved king of science-fiction that it is today.

Without McQuarrie's work, it is unlikely that 20th Century Fox would have taken the gamble on George Lucas' series which McQuarrie had been working on long before it was ever commissioned. Following the success of Star Wars, Lucas commissioned him to work on Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

McQuarrie even eventually won an Oscar for his work on Cocoon. I wish I could say more about this spectacular artists work, but sadly, I, like many, didn't know much about him, partly because fans don't often hear much about concept artists which we hope will soon change.

He will be surely missed by so many people and our thoughts are with his family.
